Preface

Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects of the English language. But students do not pay as much attention to it as they should do. To improve vocabulary, they should work at it continuously and steadily. Undoubtedly, one of the best ways of enriching vocabulary is to read English newspapers, magazines, books. But students preparing for competitive examinations are reluctant to devote sufficient time to build up a large vocabulary. For them, there is one way to develop it. They can learn, with practice, to figure out meanings of words and phrases by studying the context. That’s why many of the sentences in this book, in which idioms, phrasal verbs are used, are gleaned from various sources.

Idioms and phrasal verbs in particular pose difficulties for students. The reason is: their meanings are different from the meanings of individual words. These difficulties can be overcome by adopting one method and it is: look at the example of the idiom in context and guess the meaning of the idiom from the context. This helps students think actively about the idioms or expressions and learn to understand new idioms or expressions faster.

We are thankful to our friends for their valuable suggestions. We hope the book will go a long way towards helping students use and improve English vocabulary, which, in turn, will help them do any competitive exam with great aplomb.
