NIRMALA SADANAND Series is being published as a Popular Prakashan imprint to commemorate Nirmala (1924-2011) and Sadanand Bhatkal (1922-2011) who assisted Ganesh Ramrao Bhatkal (1896-1972) in establishing Popular Book Depot (established in 1924) and its publishing division Popular Prakashan.

Sadanand played an important role in establishing book trade organisations and in putting Indian publishing on the world map. He planned a number of important books in English and nurtured the G. R. Bhatkal Foundation. Through the Foundation he co-edited a three-volume Encyclopaedia of Marathi Literature.

Apart from their sterling contribution to the book trade, particularly as editors of The Indian Publisher and Bookseller (1950-1985), they had both participated in India’s freedom movement.

Keer’s biography of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was first published by the author. Now it is being re-issued in the series with chronology, bibliography and some additional matter, as appendices.

A report published in a Marathi periodical in 1927 that throws light on the only meeting in India between Mahatma Gandhi and Barrister Savarkar, is being made available in an English translation by Dr Ramdas Bhatkal, for the first time as a part of the appendices.

Dhananjay Keer (1913-1984), the foremost biographer in India, had in his student days in Ratnagiri the privilege of working with Savarkar. Keer was influenced by Savarkar and Keer’s further work on Dr Ambedkar, Jotirao Phooley and Rajarshi Shahu Chhatrapati was also a result of this influence.

Keer’s biographies have enabled scholars to explore sources hitherto not available to them. His biographies of Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856-1920), Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883-1966) trace the political developments in India while those of Mahatma Jotirao Phooley (1827-1890), Rajarshi Shahu Chhatrapati (1874-1922) and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (1891-1956) document important socio-political events. Together these biographies give a different perspective on modern Indian history.
