It gives me immense pleasure to come out with the third edition of the book. This has enabled me not only to correct mistakes but also to add material to improve the quality.

A new chapter on D.N. Dhanagare in the section on ‘Marxist Perspective’ and two new chapters ‘Globalization: Indian Perspective’ and ‘Privatization of Education: Challenges Ahead’ in the section on Contemporary Discourses would fulfill the demand of the readers at large. It is my endeavour to go by suggestions I receive from scholars and academicians alike.

I look forward again to receiving comments from teachers, students and readers to enable me further to improve this book. 1 am thankful to Rawat Publications for bringing out this third edition and continuously reprinting the book to cater the demand of scholars and readers.
