World History: From Early Times to AD 2011
PREFACE
There are many good books available on world history but unfortunately a majority of them have been written by foreigners. So the selection of a good book on world history from among Indian writers is limited for students. Having taught world history to the undergraduate students for the last 31 years, I considered myself suited to undertake this arduous task. It took nearly ten months to complete the work and I am proud to say that I enjoyed every moment of it.
World history is a fascinating study for students and laymen alike. In this book I have organised the matter in chronological order. However, I have covered all the topics set by the University Board of Education, Karnataka State. Though the students may find more topics than what is necessary for them, the book, I am sure, would be highly useful to them. I received assistance, suggestions and guidance from many in
completing this book. I am obliged to Prof. Mustafa and Shri Jagtap of Shivaji University for rendering cartographic assistance. I am beholden to Dr. S. Settar of Karnataka University for his encouragement and assistance. I must thank my colleague, Dr. T.C. Sharma, for encouraging me to write this book. Our college typist, Shri Bhooi, shared some of my burden of typing the manuscript. My colleague in the department, Shri. Chougule, helped me in proof-reading work. My wife, Rakma, and my niece, Neeraja, also assisted me from time to time.
I am also thankful to the authorities of the National Book Trust for rendering financial assistance for the publication of this book. In the end, I would like scholars and teachers to send me suggestions to improve the quality of the book
