Physical geography, one of the two major branches of geography, represents the core of the geographical inquiries. It has made rapid strides in terms of modifications and changes in its definition, scope, methods of study and major objectives during the last few decades as it is not only “the study of unification of a number of earth sciences dealing with the nature of man’s environment but it also involves the study of spatial patterns of interactions between physical environment and human activities and the remedial measures of adverse responses imanating from such interactions. Physical geography involves the consideration of all those physical attributes and processes which affect all types of life-form in the biosphere. Physical geography, thus, studies the characteristics. genesis and distribution of various physical attributes of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atomsphere and biosphere. A separate chapter on marine resources has been included. Twin-river system has been added in chapter 17.

The present book includes the consideration of the fundamentals of lithosphere (geomorphology), hydrosphere (oceanography), atmosphere (climatology) and biosphere (biogeography) so as to make it useful to undergraduate and postgraduate students of geography. The book is expected to be equally useful for the persons appearing in different competitive examinations. The consideration of biosphere has also been included in this revised and enlarged edition of the book. Most of the examples have been cited from the country particularly from the work of the author. Important terms used in each chapter have been explained at the end of the same chapter. All the diagrams and maps have been redrawn.
