Soil is an important source of nature’s gift which plays a key role for agriculture, food and nutritional security, environmental safety and also helps to maintain the social life. If the quality of soil is well maintained then such natural resource will be able to feed the ever-increasing population of the country on a long term basis. So, in order to better understand the soil and its effective management, the different domains of soil science namely, soil physics, soll chemistry, soil fertility and plant nutrition, soil biology and biochemistry, soil survey, genesis and classification, soil mineralogy, soil conservation, etc. are required to be studied for sustained agricultural production in India. Drawing on author’s more than 35 years of teaching and research experience in the field of soil science and feedback received from teachers of different agricultural universities as well as recent changes in syllabi by ICAR, it is felt necessary to revise the book, “Introductory Soil Science”. The fourth edition of this text book is a comprehensive one and will meet the need of students engaged in UG and PG programme and also teachers engaged in agricultural education.
