Although is studies of anthropologicaly nature and interest have been carried out for the last two hundred years or so, it is only during the last one hundred years that anthropology has been recognised as a separate discipline. The first academic position in an anthropology was held by Edward Tylor at Oxford in 1884. He is one of the pioneering anthropologists and the author of the first executive study of human society and culture. Til almost the first quarter of the 20th century the common man and even the intellectual class considered the contemporary anthropologist as eccentric. This was primarily due to the anthropologist’s interest in “bizzarre” and “inconsequential things. More academically speaking the subject matter of physical anthropology falls into two main tields the study of man as a product of evolutionary process, and the study and analysis of human populations. The methods employed in these two fields may be different, the results are closely miated and information thus gained supplement each other. The second mor branch of anthropology is social or cultural anthropology. Of these two terms Social Anthropology pepo in Great Britain and other countries influenced by the academic traditions of it as a consequitince of colonial rule. Hence, Commonwealth counties, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Finland etc., use the term social anthropology extensively.
