It Is Win great pleasure and no less engernese dat, having written biographies of Gandhi’s great contemporaries and opponents like Tilak, Savarkar and Ambedkar, I present this biography of Mahatma Gandhi. We of our generation are still near to the times in which Gandhi worked and preached. According to Gandhi, it is not in the fitness of things to measure the worth of a great man’s work before we have seen it in its entirety, and even after his death it takes some time to assess it. Gandhi is separated from us by a period of almost twenty-five years and it is not too early to write his life at this distance of time.

Several useful biographies of occasional interest appeared during the birth centenary of Gandhi. His disciples, too, have written his biographies, but Gandhi has truly said that a disciple cannot write a critical biography “What could a disciple however write about his master? How could he write it? It would be presumptuous for a disciple to do so. The true disciple merges himself in the Guru and so can never be a critic of the Guru. Bhakti or devotion has no eye for shortcomings.”

I have painstakingly gone through the voluminous material relating to Gandhi, consisting of about forty thousand pages, and in addition to it a number of newspaper files and other contemporary records. Having done this, I have applied myself to depicting not only the outer life of Gandhi’s work and activity, but the inner emotion and passion, evolution, development and the working of his mind.
